William Edwards’s single stone arch has spanned the Taff at Pontypridd since 1756, and for a time was the longest single-span bridge in the world at 140 feet. Edwards, a self-taught mason, got there on his fourth attempt — earlier bridges fell to floods and their own weight — and pierced the haunches with three round holes each side to lighten the load. It’s a steep, humpbacked crossing, now for foot traffic only. Pontypridd station is a short walk away.
