Henry II built Orford Castle between 1165 and 1173, and its keep — polygonal outside, round within, with three square turrets — was an experimental design for its day; you can climb it for a view over the marshes. The village below has a smokehouse on the quay and boats out to the shingle of Orford Ness. It’s a slow 11km from Wickham Market station, so most people arrive by car.
