Wild shingle spit with lighthouse and pagodas.
Open to visitorsa National Trust place — check opening times and admission before you go
A long shingle spit runs down the coast from Orford, one of the largest vegetated shingle habitats in Europe and, for most of the twentieth century, a closed military testing ground — radar work, atomic-weapons research, and the concrete “pagodas” that still stand among the stones. The National Trust now keeps it as a nature reserve. Access is by their ferry from Orford Quay on limited open days between spring and autumn, booked in advance.
