Maggi Hambling's steel shell on the shingle.
Maggi Hambling’s steel scallop shell has stood on the shingle north of Aldeburgh since 2003, a tribute to the composer Benjamin Britten, who used to walk this beach. Cut through its raised edge runs a line from his opera Peter Grimes: “I hear those voices that will not be drowned.” Hambling meant it to be climbed and sat on, and children duly do. It split the town when it arrived and still gets argued over. A ten-minute walk up the beach from the centre.
