Benjamin Britten lived at Aldeburgh and walked its shingle almost daily; the music festival he founded still fills the coast each June. The seafront is a run of pastel houses, huts selling the morning’s catch, and the timber-framed Moot Hall. On the beach north of the centre stands Maggi Hambling’s Scallop, a steel shell cut with a line from Peter Grimes. Saxmundham station is about 10km inland.
