Thorpeness was dreamed up as a private holiday village by Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie from 1910, its cottages built as mock-Tudor and Jacobean fantasies around a shallow boating lake, the Meare, laid out with Peter Pan-themed islands for children to explore. Rising over the lot is the House in the Clouds, a water tower disguised as a tall house. Aldeburgh is a short walk down the coast.
