Merthyr TydfilMerthyr Tudful
At the head of the Taff Valley, Merthyr Tydfil was the iron capital of the world in the early 1800s, its ironworks at Cyfarthfa, Dowlais, Penydarren and Plymouth making it the largest town in Wales. In 1831 workers rose against wage cuts and raised a red flag for the first time in Britain; Dic Penderyn was hanged in the aftermath. Cyfarthfa Castle, built by the ironmaster Crawshays, now houses a museum telling the story.
