Parkland laid out around Cyfarthfa Castle, the castellated mansion the ironmaster William Crawshay built above his Merthyr works in the 1820s. The house is now a museum, and the grounds run down to lakes and lawns beside the Taff. Free to walk, with the castle worth a look while you’re there. Merthyr Tydfil station is about 1.5km away, and the town’s parish church lies between the two.
