Malham is the busiest walking base in the southern Dales, a village of white limestone houses along a beck with two big pubs and a National Park centre. The huge curved cliff of Malham Cove is a fifteen-minute walk north, and the ravine of Gordale Scar lies just east — the pair make one of the finest short circuits in England. It gets packed on summer weekends; Kirkby Malham is the calmer neighbour a mile down the beck.
