A limestone gorge that closes overhead — one of the Dales' great set-pieces.
Gordale Scar is a limestone ravine near Malham, its overhanging walls closing in around a pair of waterfalls. It pulled in the Romantics — Wordsworth wrote about it, Turner painted it — and it still stops people in their tracks. A short, easy walk from the village reaches the mouth of the gorge; going beyond the lower fall means a scramble up wet rock, which isn’t for everyone. Many pair it with Malham Cove and Janet’s Foss in one loop. Hellifield is the nearest station, roughly 9km away.
