Legend has it that Edmund, king and martyr, was killed by Danes at Hoxne, and the village has claimed the story for centuries. In 1992 a metal-detectorist searching a field here turned up the Hoxne Hoard, the largest cache of late-Roman gold and silver found in Britain, now in the British Museum. The village itself is timber cottages and a fine medieval church in the Waveney valley. Diss station is about 6km north.
