At the centre of Diss lies the Mere, a deep natural pool six acres across, with the old town streets and a fifteenth-century church rising around it. Beneath a few metres of water sits a much greater depth of soft mud, which is why it has never been drained. It’s an unusual thing to find in the middle of a market town. The station is about a kilometre east.
