Substantial ruinsruined, but plenty survives above ground
In a copse south of South Elmham Hall stand the rubble walls of a roofless church — nave walls still four metres high, with the stump of a massive west tower and its stair turret. Nobody agrees on the date: a Saxon minster of around 630, or a bishop’s private chapel of about 1100. Only two other English churches have that tower form, both of them on episcopal manors. It sits on private farmland, and the Hall’s guided walks are pre-booked groups only, so check before making the trip. Harleston is the nearest town.
