The red-and-white striped lighthouse at Happisburgh is the oldest working light in East Anglia and the only one in Britain run independently, saved by a local trust after Trinity House proposed closing it in 1988. Built in 1790, it stands back from a coast that is steadily losing ground to the sea. The tall medieval church tower is the other landmark here, visible far out to sea.
