A belt of Monterey pines shelters this 32-acre garden a couple of miles from the north-east coast, warm enough behind them for tree ferns, palms and succulents. Alan Gray and Graham Robeson began it in 1973 and kept adding rooms over the years — a Californian desert wash, an exotic garden, topiary, a cornfield sown with scarce arable flowers. Paid entry on set open days.
