Sir James Grant laid out Grantown-on-Spey in 1765 as a planned town, and the grid of grey granite still shows it — a broad main street opening into a central square. It makes a comfortable base on the upper Spey, with the Anagach Woods right on the doorstep for walks and the Cairngorms close at hand. Carrbridge is the nearest station, about 14km to the south-west.
