Once a Saxon cathedral seat, Dorchester is now a single long street of old cottages, coaching inns and antique shops gathered round the great church of Dorchester Abbey. The abbey’s Jesse window and lead font are why most people come. The Thames and the Dyke Hills earthworks lie a field or two south, with Wittenham Clumps rising across the river.
