Dent is a surprise: whitewashed cottages along narrow cobbled streets, tucked deep in remote Dentdale. The geologist Adam Sedgwick, one of the founders of the modern science, was born here in 1785, and a rough block of pink Shap granite in the main street stands as his memorial. Two good pubs and a small brewery keep it lively. Confusingly, Dent station — the highest mainline station in England — is a steep few miles east of the village. Sedbergh lies over the hill.
