Sedbergh is England’s official book town, and its main street is dotted with secondhand and specialist bookshops, with a book festival each autumn. It sits at the foot of the Howgill Fells — those smooth, whaleback hills that give some of the finest ridge walking in the north — technically inside the Yorkshire Dales park and historically part of Yorkshire’s West Riding, though it has been in Cumbria since 1974. Sedbergh School dominates the town. Dent lies over the hill to the south.
