Cirencester was Corinium, the second-largest town in Roman Britain, and traces survive in the museum and the grassy amphitheatre earthworks on the edge of town. The centre is handsome Cotswold stone around the church of St John the Baptist, one of the largest parish churches in England. Kemble station is about 6km south-west.
