Cirencester built its open-air pool in 1869 and opened it the following year as a “sanitary agent”, a place where townspeople could get clean. The pool lies on the edge of Cirencester Park, the big landscaped park on the west side of the town, and is fed by spring water. In the 1970s the council no longer wanted it, and a group of local swimmers campaigned to stop it being filled in; volunteers have run the pool ever since, now as a registered charity. Alongside the 27-metre main pool there’s now a pop-up sauna and plunge pools. The water is heated, the season runs from April to September with extra sessions into the autumn, and you can book online or pay at the gate. Kemble station is about 6km south-west.
