When it opened in 1789, this was the longest canal tunnel in the world, carrying the Thames and Severn Canal nearly two miles beneath the hills. The canal is long abandoned and the tunnel no longer runs through, but its ornate classical portal still stands in the woods above Coates. A footpath leads to it; Sapperton and The Bell are close by, with Kemble station about 4km off.
