Grassed-over earthwork banks on the edge of Cirencester are all that remain of one of Roman Britain’s largest amphitheatres, built to serve Corinium — a town second only to London in its day. The oval arena once held thousands on timber seating; now it’s a hummocky green hollow, open access and free. It’s a short walk from Cirencester, or about 5km from Kemble station.
