Bridport made rope and net for centuries — King John ordered ships’ cordage here as early as the 13th century — and the trade shaped the town. Its streets are unusually wide because rope was laid out and twisted along them in the open, on the long strips of land behind the houses. Today it’s known for a busy twice-weekly street market and a cluster of antiques shops. The coast at West Bay is a couple of miles south.
