Chester City Walls form the most complete circuit of Roman and medieval defences of any city in England, a walkway of nearly two miles right around the old centre. You can climb up and follow the sandstone ramparts past the racecourse, the cathedral and the river, looking down over Chester as you go. It’s free, open all the time, and easily the best way to get your bearings. The station is about 1.5km north-east.
