Along Chester’s four main streets you’ll find the Rows, medieval galleries that run at first-floor level above the street-level shops, so there are effectively two tiers of shopfronts linked by covered timber walkways. Nobody’s entirely sure why they were built this way, and there’s nothing else quite like them in the country. Wander up and down and you’ll see a mix of genuine medieval timberwork and later Victorian mock-Tudor. Combine a stroll here with a circuit of the nearby City Walls.
