Roman walls and unique galleried medieval Rows.
Chester is the walled city on the Dee, and about as complete a historic centre as England has. You can walk almost the full circuit of the Roman and medieval walls, wander the Rows — two tiers of covered galleried shops found nowhere else — and take in the cathedral and the racecourse on the old Roodee. Much of the famous black-and-white is Victorian mock-Tudor, but it’s done handsomely. The station is a short walk north-east of the centre.
