Eaton Hall has been the Grosvenor family’s seat since the 15th century, but the house you’d actually see today isn’t the Victorian Gothic pile the name might suggest — it was rebuilt in the 1970s in a stark flat-roofed style, then re-cased in the 1980s to look more like a French château. The real draw is the 88 acres of gardens: rose borders, a Dutch tea house, a walled kitchen garden. They open to the public just twice a year, on pre-booked charity open days. Chester station is about 6km north.
