Chester Cathedral began as a Benedictine abbey in 1093 and became a cathedral at the Reformation. It’s built of the warm red sandstone you see all over the city, and the medieval choir stalls of around 1380, with their carved misericords, are reckoned among the finest in the country. There’s a quiet cloister too. You’ll find it in the heart of Chester, a couple of minutes from the city walls. Chester station is under a kilometre away.
