The Portergate preserves the earthworks of a former Roman fort in North Yorkshire. The Albion Guide maps six Roman forts in the county; this is one of them. It sits within the North York Moors National Park.

Pickering Moor Roman road and Wheeldale Roman Road are among the Roman sites within 8.3 km. Egton Station is 15.4 km away to the north.
