St Hilda’s is a tiny, ancient church tucked in a wooded dale beside Thornton Beck, a short walk up from Thornton-le-Dale. Its origins run back to the early Norman period, and possibly to Saxon times before that. Set into the south wall of the nave is a lovely Anglo-Scandinavian carved cross, with more 9th- and 10th-century stones by the porch. A peaceful spot, open access and free to visit.
