Scampston’s big draw is the Walled Garden, laid out inside the original 18th-century kitchen garden walls and replanted around 2000 to a design by the Dutch landscape designer Piet Oudolf — a series of contrasting “rooms”, from a billowing perennial meadow to a clipped, still garden of box and yew. The Regency hall beyond, still the Legard family’s home, opens for guided tours in summer. Grounds and café run April to November, Wednesday to Sunday, with an admission charge. The North York Moors rise a few miles north.
