Coming off the A170 the first thing you meet is a 14th-century tower with a spire on it, all that survives of Wykeham’s medieval church — William Butterfield patched it up as a lychgate when he built the present St Helen and All Saints just to the north in 1853–55. That newer church is the working parish church. The Cistercian nunnery founded here around 1153 lies under the churchyard and shows nothing above ground. Opening varies across the Moor & Dale benefice, so ring ahead if you want to get inside; the tower and churchyard you can see any time.
