The Quiet Woman is best known for its sign: a headless woman above the slogan “Soft words turneth away wrath”, tied to an old local tale of a nagging wife silenced for good. The pub sits in Earl Sterndale under the reef-knoll peaks of Chrome Hill and Parkhouse Hill. It has stood shut since its long-serving landlord died in 2020, so check it has reopened before making a special trip.
