The highest ground in mid-Wales, a broad wet moorland where both the Severn and the Wye rise
Open accessfree to visit at any reasonable time
There is not much rock on Pumlumon Fawr — the highest ground in mid-Wales at 753m, known in English as Plynlimon — but there is a lot of weather. It is a broad, rounded hill of grass and peat, often wet underfoot, and its real distinction is water: both the River Severn and the River Wye rise within a couple of miles of each other on its slopes before heading off in opposite directions. The Severn Way and Wye Valley Walk both begin up here, and the Cambrian Way crosses the tops. There are few landmarks to steer by in cloud, so a map and compass are worth having. A small lake, Llyn Llygad Rheidol, sits in a corrie (a bowl in the hillside) on the north side.
