Big river, old cathedral and tall trees where the Highlands begin at Dunkeld, with easy walking and hills for those who want them
Dunkeld is where the Tay swings out of the hills and the Lowlands give way to the Highlands, and it makes for one of the gentler ways into Highland Perthshire. The scenic area runs to fifty-seven square kilometres of river, wooded gorge and hill, with the twin villages of Dunkeld and Birnam at its heart.
The ruins of Dunkeld Cathedral sit right on the riverbank, a lovely short stroll from the town. For a bit more effort, Birnam Hill is a stiff but manageable climb with a wide view over the strath, and stronger walkers can head further out to Deuchary Hill in the quieter country behind.
The riverside and forest paths are well suited to families and less-confident walkers, and they are at their best in autumn when the big trees turn. The hill routes climb more steeply, with stonier ground underfoot, so they suit dry days and boots with a bit of grip.
