Beatrix Potter spent childhood summers at Birnam, and the village keeps the link with a garden and exhibition in her memory. Down by the Tay stands the Birnam Oak, a huge veteran tree said to be a survivor of the wood that “came to Dunsinane” in Macbeth. It’s a short, gorgeous riverside stroll to reach it. The station, shared with Dunkeld just across the river, is right in the village.
