Katherine Parr, the last of Henry VIII’s wives, lived and died at Sudeley and lies buried in its chapel — the only English castle where a queen is entombed in the grounds. Ten gardens surround the Tudor house at Winchcombe, the finest being the Queens’ Garden, a yew-hedged parterre on the ground where Tudor queens are said to have walked. Paid entry, open most of the year; Cheltenham Spa station is around 11km south-west.
