The hamlet of Stanway, below the Cotswold escarpment, is built round Stanway House, a Jacobean manor in golden stone. You go in past a three-gabled gatehouse of about 1630, and the tithe barn was built for Tewkesbury Abbey around 1370. In the water garden, the Stanway Fountain, the tallest gravity-fed fountain in the world, has a single jet more than 300 feet high; the house and gardens open on a few summer afternoons. The thatched cricket pavilion, raised on mushroom-shaped staddle stones, was given by J.M. Barrie, a summer visitor in the 1920s, and the war memorial has a bronze St George by Alexander Fisher with lettering by Eric Gill. The Cotswold Way runs on to Stanton, a mile north.
