A Neolithic long barrow sits on the ridge above Winchcombe, roughly 5,000 years old and some 50 metres long. Its grand entrance is a dummy — the burial chambers were reached from the sides, and excavations found the bones of around 31 people inside. English Heritage looks after it, though reaching it means a decent uphill walk from the Winchcombe road; there’s no easier way up.
