Fallow deer still graze the park at Charlecote, as they have since the deer park was created in 1477, and it’s here that the young Shakespeare was supposedly caught poaching on Sir Thomas Lucy’s land, a tale later writers loved even if no record backs it. The Elizabethan house sits beside the Avon in grounds later reworked with a nod to Capability Brown. National Trust since 1946; the village of Charlecote is at the gates.
