John Stevens Henslow — Darwin’s teacher at Cambridge — founded this garden and opened it in 1846, laying out its great tree collection to show how plants vary. Forty acres now hold systematic beds, a chain of glasshouses, a scented garden and a winter garden, a mile south of the city centre. Open daily with an admission charge; Cambridge station is under a kilometre east.
