King’s College Chapel is the show-stopper of Cambridge’s skyline: Henry VI founded the college in 1441, but the famous fan-vaulted roof wasn’t finished until 1515, under Henry VIII. Rubens’ Adoration of the Magi hangs behind the altar, and the college choir’s Nine Lessons and Carols is broadcast from here every Christmas Eve. Entry to chapel and grounds is by timed ticket, self-guided, though the chapel sometimes closes for services. The River Cam runs right past the gates, and Cambridge station is about 2km south-east.
