Built on the site of a medieval Dominican friary, Emmanuel College’s gardens run to nearly 12 hectares behind its courts, fed by a branch of Hobson’s Conduit that has watered them since the 1630s. New Court is shaded by a huge, low-spreading oriental plane tree, and there’s a duck pond dating from 1631. The gardens and chapel are free to walk into daily, entering through the porters’ lodge on St Andrew’s Street. Cambridge station is a little over a kilometre south-east.
