Founded in 1511 under the will of Lady Margaret Beaufort, St John’s is one of Cambridge’s largest colleges, spread along the River Cam in a run of linked courts. Its best-known feature is the Bridge of Sighs, a covered Gothic crossing built in 1831 to link Third Court with the Victorian “wedding cake” of New Court. Visitors can walk the public route through the college for a ticketed fee, seasonally variable, with the riverside gardens at their best in spring and summer.
