St Chad came to Lichfield in 669 and lived as a hermit by a spring in the wood here, and this sandstone church on the north bank of Stowe Pool marks the spot. The building itself is largely 12th-century, much restored since. St Chad’s Well, his old bathing spring, still stands just outside and is dressed with flowers each Maundy Thursday. It’s open to visitors, a quiet counterpoint to Lichfield Cathedral a mile south-west. Lichfield City station is about a mile away.
