Lichfield Cathedral
National iconOnly English cathedral with three surviving spires.
Lichfield is the only medieval English cathedral with three spires, known locally as the Ladies of the Vale, the central one rising to around 77m. Inside are three remarkable survivals: the Lichfield Gospels, an illuminated manuscript of about 730; the carved Lichfield Angel, part of an 8th-century shrine chest; and the Herkenrode glass in the Lady Chapel, Flemish work of the 1530s brought from a dissolved Belgian abbey in 1801. Open daily, a few minutes’ walk from Lichfield City station.
