Little of the Premonstratensian abbey of 1176 survives beyond the west tower, which was rebuilt as a chapel in the 17th century and serves as a parish church today. It belongs to the people of Sheffield rather than to the Church of England — a condition of the gift — and volunteers and the congregation run it between them, using the 1662 prayer book. The Peak District starts about four miles further out.
