The historian and politician Thomas Babington Macaulay was born at Rothley Court, then known as Rothley Temple, in 1800, in a house that had begun as a Knights Templar preceptory. The village has a triangular green and, beside the church, one of the finest Anglo-Saxon carved crosses in the county. It lies in the Soar valley between Leicester and Loughborough.
