Samuel Taylor Coleridge was born here in 1772, the vicar’s son, in the small town on the River Otter. Its great parish church of St Mary was rebuilt in the 14th century as a miniature of Exeter Cathedral, cruciform with twin transept towers. Ottery is also known for its Tar Barrels on the fifth of November, when men carry flaming barrels through the crowded streets.
